Iowa high school state volleyball 2019: Wednesday's scores, highlights and match recaps

The Iowa high school state volleyball tournament continued Wednesday at the U.S. Cellular Center with quarterfinal matches in 3A, 2A and 1A.

Class 3A scores

No. 13 Union 3, No. 1 Davenport Assumption 2 (15-25, 20-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-9)

Union (31-11) very nearly was a three-and-out casualty, dropping the first two sets and facing elimination at 24-21 in the third. Assumption had three chances to close it out, but Union wasn't ready to call it a day. Or a season.

Jasmyn Bush collected 26 kills as 13th-ranked Union Community rallied from near-extinction to shock No. 1 Davenport Assumption.

'She was unstoppable,' Union setter Allie Driscol said. 'We kept going to her. Once they stopped her, we were going to go somewhere else.

No. 7 Mount Vernon 3, No. 5 West Liberty 2 (25-13, 23-25, 21-25, 29-27, 15-11)

A five-set match can make some volleyball teams wilt.

Not Mount Vernon. The Mustangs were right at home.

For the third straight postseason match, Mount Vernon was forced to go the distance. And for the third straight time, the Mustangs mustered enough to come through in a pinch.

No. 2 Carroll Kuemper 3, No. 12 Unity Christian 1 (25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 30-28)

Carroll Kuemper sure looks the part of a defending state champion that has been through some battles.

Six-foot-3 senior middle hitter Kara Peter leads a quartet of players that helped the second-ranked Knights win their first state title last season and they are back at the U.S. Cellular Center with some new faces fighting for a repeat.

'It was just a lot of trust,' said Peter, who posted a match-high 30 kills.

No. 3 Red Oak 3, No. 10 Nevada 0 (26-24, 25-15, 25-18)

The Red Oak volleyball team has been the envy of others at times this season. Opponents have asked how they could learn to work as hard for each other as the third-ranked Tigers do.

'We are a very well-rounded team,' Red Oak senior outside hitter Chloe Johnson said.

Johnson posted nine kills and eight digs for Red Oak (34-6), while senior outside hitter Sophie Walker added 14 kills and 14 digs. Both Johnson (1,240 kills) and Walker (1,174) surpassed the career 1,000-kill mark earlier this season and rank 1-2 in school history.

Class 2A scores

No. 1 Western Christian 3, Hudson 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17)

Tammi Veerbeek called it 'a typical first-round match at state.'

Typical, because the new players had some butterflies. Some jitters.

Typical, because Western Christian was victorious.

No. 5 Osage 3, No. 6 Grundy Center 0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-16)

The fifth-ranked Green Devils claimed their rubber match with No. 6 Grundy Center and did it emphatically.

'Our team chemistry really pushed us along,' said Paige Kisley, who stands a modest 5-foot-7 but knocked down 16 kills. 'We just had to take a breath and enjoy the moment.'

The scores indicated superiority by the Green Devils (37-6), who split a pair of matches with Grundy Center (32-9) in a tournament at Waverly on Oct. 5. This one wasn't close.

No. 3 Dyersville Beckman 3, No. 8 Van Buren County 0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-14)

When Beckman arrived at the U.S. Cellular Cente for the third year in a row, Coach Todd Troutman asked his players to raise a hand if they had ever played in the tournament before.

Senior middle hitter Paige McDermott was the only one.

Armed with a cast of new faces, the third-ranked Blazers are right where they were last year. In the state semifinals.

No. 7 Clarion CGD 3, No. 4 Wilton 0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-17)

It was an upset in seed only.

It is difficult to consider any volleyball team an underdog with a player like Morgan Middleton on its front line.

'It felt amazing,' Middleton said after she broke the Class 2A state volleyball tournament record with 34 kills.

Class 1A scores

No. 1 Sidney 3, Springville 0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-11)

The Springville Orioles are on a trajectory to do some big things here someday.

For Sidney, someday is now.

Led by Kelsey Hobbie's 17 kills, the top-ranked Cowgirls swept youthful Springville.

1A: No. 5 North Tama 3, No. 4 Le Mars Gehlen 0 (25-20, 25-22, 26-24)

Katie Kopriva is the focal point, sure. But not the only option.

'We know that people are going to camp on me,' Kopriva said. 'There are other girls on the team than just me that can hit.'

Carlie Gorder and Abby Deboef, for instance.

With fifth-ranked North Tama facing a 24-23 deficit in the third set, it was Deboef that came through with a kill and a block. Then, with the Redhawks at match point, Gorder closed it out with a kill.

No. 8 Fort Madison Holy Trinity 3, No. 2 Council Bluffs St. Albert 1 (25-16, 25-23, 19-25, 25-15)

The improvement in Claire Pothitakis can be found in her expansive array of shots.

The Fort Madison Holy Trinity junior outside hitter is now generating kills with cross-court shots, sideline strikes and tips to voids in the opposition.

It is a big reason why the Crusaders are in the state volleyball semifinals for the fourth year in a row.

Holy Trinity takes down No. 2 St. Albert in 1A

No. 6 Wapsie Valley 2, No. 3 Janesville 1 (25-23, 25-19, 16-25, 25-14)

The surprising ride of Wapsie Valley volleyball continues.

First, the sixth-ranked Warriors became just the third team in 22 years to deny Tripoli a berth in the state tournament. Now, they have vanquished the four-time defending champions.

The Warriors smothered the Wildcats with an overpowering duo of hitters in sophomore Lydia Imbrogno and freshman Kalvyn Rosengarten. Rosengarten led Wapsie Valley with 15 kills, while Imbrogno added 13.
