Coe’s baseball team got great pitching and held on to beat Buena Vista, 4-3, in the American Rivers Conference tournament, advancing to Saturday’s championship.

Top-seeded Coe used solid pitching and a four-run third inning to scratch out a 6-4 win over Loras in its opening game of the American Rivers Conference baseball tournament Thursday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

After all the time on the baseball diamond playing games, pitching in the bullpen, fielding groundballs, tracking down flyballs and taking cuts in batting practice, Coe’s baseball team can still be found hanging out together.

Dubuque Wahlert graduate Cael Schmitt started four seasons at point guard for Coe College, helping the Kohawks reach back-to-back NCAA Division III national basketball tournaments. He entered the transfer portal for his graduate season and has committed to Northern Iowa as a rare kid going from D-III to Division I.

A 2008 Cedar Rapids Washington High graduate, Phil Richmond grew up hearing Polish spoken by his maternal grandparents who had emigrated from Poland in Eastern Europe after World War II. Now 34, Richmond never dreamed he would end up living in Poland and chasing his baseball dreams as a right-handed pitcher and sometimes position player.

Coe head baseball coach and Athletics Director Steve Cook recalled the impact that the late Bill Quinby had on him, his program and Kohawk athletics. Quinby passed away Saturday at the age of 92.

If there was a project that needed a little help, a program that needed a boost or a person in need, Bill Quinby was the person to contact. Quinby died in his sleep Saturday morning at the age of 92.

Coe’s roster consists of seven fifth-year seniors. Many returned from last year’s NCAA Division III World Series team to make one more postseaosn run together.

Coe’s Jack Allison had some struggles at the plate recently. So, he started gameday with a 9 a.m. hitting session. It helped him go 3-for-4 with a double and two-run home run in an 11-6 loss to Buena Vista Friday at Bill Quinby Field at Daniels Park.

Coe’s Cade Hornback ran the gauntlet just to face another. Hornback survived a regional field that included four wrestlers in the top six nationally and advanced to his first berth to the NCAA Division III Championships at La Crosse, Wis., beginning Friday at 11 a.m.

The road to the NCAA Division III national tournament is tough for midwest programs compared to other regions in the country. Coe senior Will Esmoil wanted to make the most out of what could be his final season. He succeeded at the NCAA Division III Lower Midwest Regional wrestling tournament, posting three pins and two technical falls to earn a berth back to the national tournament after a year hiatus.

Coe’s Matt Arsenault has transitioned from a part-time starter who didn’t participate in last year’s postseason to the seventh-ranked 197-pounder nationally. He will attempt to earn a national berth at the NCAA Division III Lower Midwest Regional men’s wrestling tournament Thursday and Friday at Alliant Energy PowerHouse.

Upper Iowa swept Quincy University and University of Indianapolis on Sunday, earning a share of the conference dual title with McKendree and Maryville. Coe closed its regular season with a win over Dubuque. Plus some final thoughts from the IHSAA state wrestling tournament.
