Jan Jensen was a new Iowa assistant coach at Iowa in 2000 when Randi Henderson was a senior player. Twenty-four years later, the two native Iowans have reunited. Henderson is a new Hawkeyes assistant coach for new head coach Jensen.

Bill Quinby insisted on not having a funeral, but OKed a celebration of life, which happened Saturday at Coe College. Dignitaries such as former Iowa Governor Chet Culver and University of Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz spoke, honoring one of Cedar Rapids’ finest, who died in April at age 92.

Coe College’s softball team plays at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland this weekend in a NCAA Division III super regional. If the Kohawks win the best-of-3 series, they’ll qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships in Texas for a second consecutive year.

Dubuque Wahlert graduate Cael Schmitt started four seasons at point guard for Coe College, helping the Kohawks reach back-to-back NCAA Division III national basketball tournaments. He entered the transfer portal for his graduate season and has committed to Northern Iowa as a rare kid going from D-III to Division I.

A 2008 Cedar Rapids Washington High graduate, Phil Richmond grew up hearing Polish spoken by his maternal grandparents who had emigrated from Poland in Eastern Europe after World War II. Now 34, Richmond never dreamed he would end up living in Poland and chasing his baseball dreams as a right-handed pitcher and sometimes position player.

Coe head baseball coach and Athletics Director Steve Cook recalled the impact that the late Bill Quinby had on him, his program and Kohawk athletics. Quinby passed away Saturday at the age of 92.
