The Iowa Hawkeyes baseball team beat the Coe Kohawks 8-2 on Tuesday.

It took until the last week of the regular season for Coe College’s men’s basketball team to clinch the sixth and final spot in the American Rivers Conference Tournament. The Kohawks then won three straight road games over five days to win the tournament and a spot in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since 1976.

Coe 141-pounder Bryce Parke has endured the highs and lows of the college wrestling season. He thrived against rival Cornell, posting an 8-0 major decision over Carter Fecht in the Kohawks’ 33-6 dual win.

The Hawkeyes had an interesting weekend. Plus, Coe and Upper Iowa picked up impressive wins, Brad Smith got his 700th dual victory and the IHSAA released regional dual pairings.

Trailing by four at intermission, Wartburg (10-0, 8-0 A-R-C) forced turnovers and capitalized on a few short fields in the second half to preserve its perfect season in a 19-14 win over Coe (7-3, 6-2).

The Coe Kohawks know there is more at stake in the regular-season finale against Wartburg. A chance for an American Rivers Conference title and a postseason berth is still dangling in front of them.

Not only was Coe’s 37-31 win over Central an important game in the American Rivers Conference standings, but it fell on the same day Coe dedicated the scoreboard in former coach Steve Staker’s name with a halftime ceremony of family and supporters on the field.

Dubuque benefited from a Coe holding penalty in the end zone, taking a 15-14 lead and the ball for a game-ending 3:25 drive. The Spartans handed Coe its first American Rivers Conference loss.
