Bethel University got two touchdowns each from quarterback Cooper Drews and running back Aaron Ellingson and eked past Coe, 31-26, in a NCAA Division III playoff football first-round game Saturday at St. Paul, Minn.

Coe College senior football running back Trenton Barnes is from Madison, Ind., in the very southern part of the state. He answered a recruiting e-mail from Coe head coach Tyler Staker his senior year of high school and ended up coming to Cedar Rapids for college. He became the American Rivers Conference’s leading rusher this season.

The Coe College football team had one more chance Saturday to impress the committee that will select the NCAA Division III football playoff field. It did so, pasting Simpson, 47-10, in its regular-season finale at Clark Field. The Kohawks have an upcoming bye and will have to wait a week to see if they’re in the field of 40.

NCAA Division III 13th-ranked Wartburg College beat Coe College 14-7 in an American Rivers Conference football game Saturday at Clark Field in Cedar Rapids.
