Clothing worn by dead robber led to hideout near Amana

The mother-and-daughter run bakery known for its scratch-made pastries, cookies, bread and pies in Iowa County, will open a new location at NewBo City Market in May.

The temporary closure comes immediately after competitor Raising Cane’s opened a new Cedar Rapids location across the street.

Mary Emily Wright died at age 6 on Aug. 19, 1854, in her parents’ log cabin along the road that would became Highway 6/151 in Iowa County. She was buried in the cemetery across the road from her home. Her grave, surrounded by a white fence in the railroad right of way, is maintained to this day.

The seventh annual Amana Colonies Wurst Festival will be held in the historical Amana Colonies this Friday and Saturday.

What used to be a bustling exit on I-80 in Iowa County now is studded with empty buildings since the Wasserbahn Waterpark Resort closed last month. County officials say new boutiques, restaurants and VRBO-style rentals in surrounding towns are picking up the slack.

This second annual event will feature more than 200 quilts on display, with over 100 offered for sale. A number of vendors and guest artists will be at the event, and quilting demos and exhibits will be showcased. Weekend passes are $5.

The pandemic created financial challenges the professional troupe couldn’t overcome. So instead of celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Amana venue announced Friday it is closing.
