The Amana Colonies, long known for family-style meals and Oktoberfest, is planning an agritourism venue that could include pick-your-own produce, tree houses, corn crib slides and a beer garden.

What used to be a bustling exit on I-80 in Iowa County now is studded with empty buildings since the Wasserbahn Waterpark Resort closed last month. County officials say new boutiques, restaurants and VRBO-style rentals in surrounding towns are picking up the slack.

This second annual event will feature more than 200 quilts on display, with over 100 offered for sale. A number of vendors and guest artists will be at the event, and quilting demos and exhibits will be showcased. Weekend passes are $5.

The pandemic created financial challenges the professional troupe couldn’t overcome. So instead of celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Amana venue announced Friday it is closing.

Thanks to a $70,000 matching grant, the church will soon undergo a large-scale restoration project that will allow its food pantry to expand.

That will mean some new names alongside traditional mainstays such as Schild Brau and Iowa Pale Ale. Many new styles will be offered in cans, also new for Millstream.
