Coe won both games of a college basketball doubleheader against rival Cornell at Kohawk Arena.

Not only was Coe’s 37-31 win over Central an important game in the American Rivers Conference standings, but it fell on the same day Coe dedicated the scoreboard in former coach Steve Staker’s name with a halftime ceremony of family and supporters on the field.

Dubuque benefited from a Coe holding penalty in the end zone, taking a 15-14 lead and the ball for a game-ending 3:25 drive. The Spartans handed Coe its first American Rivers Conference loss.

Carter Maske bided his time and remained committed to be Coe’s starting quarterback. He earned another chance two weeks ago and hasn’t loosened his grip.

Coe’s football team has rotated quarterbacks so far this season. Junior Carter Maske got his first start Saturday against Simpson and made the most of it, throwing three touchdowns in a 48-10 victory.

The Kohawks defeated the Rams 56-7 in their season opener at Clark Field

A running back by trade, Trenton Barnes provided an instant spark for the Coe run game, rushing for 126 yards and a touchdown and helping the Kohawks throttle rival Cornell, 56-7, Saturday at Clark Field.

Nick Casey is more confident and calm. The Coe quarterback received the starting nod over Carter Maske and Matt Walton for the opening-game start against rival Cornell this Saturday.

Former Cascade prep Alex Aitchison is a leader for an experienced and fast, versatile Coe football defense. The Kohawks are picked to finish third in the American Rivers Conference in 2022.

T.J. Deardorff has been a reliable leader on the mound and in the field for Coe, which faces North Central (Ill.) in the first round of the NCAA Division III regional tournament Friday.

Coe scored seven runs in a wild first inning and cruised to a 10-6 victory over Wartburg in the American Rivers Conference baseball tournament championship. The Kohawks earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
