Sioux City Heelan used a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull away and beat Marion, 68-59, in a Class 3A state basketball tournament quarterfinal Tuesday night. The Wolves were seeking the school’s first state tourney win since 1952, losing in last year’s quarterfinals in overtime.

Senior guard Brayson Laube played with a migraine headache through his Marion team’s 73-57 Class 3A substate final win Monday night over Charles City. He gave the Comets even bigger pains with a 37-point night that moves the Wolves back to the state tournament.

WIth Decorah having the ball and threatening to take a lead in the final minute, Marion guard Payton Hodges stole a pass and turned it into a layup that gave his Wolves a 71-68 edge with 1:07 left. That ended up being the final score of this Class 3A substate semifinal boys’ basketball game.

The Cedar Rapids Xavier girls’ basketball team was scheduled to host Marion in a Class 4A regional semifinal, but a scoreboard issue moved the game to Marion. The change appeared to throw the Saints off early, but an early second-half surge led by senior Kyla Mason and sophomore Libby Fandel allowed the defending state champions to hold off the Wolves, 54-47.
