In a bid to recruit and retain qualified workers to Linn County while grappling with record-high inflation, the county compensation board suggested bumping salaries 12 percent for the county sheriff and attorney, and 10 percent for others.
The Monday decision reverses an October board vote that provided federal pandemic relief dollars to hire a second employee in the county department that addresses issues of climate change and environmental sustainability.

The former Democratic Iowa legislator now represents county District 1.
New supervisor Kirsten Running-Marquardt joined the board on Tuesday for her first meeting. Ben Rogers was elected vice chair of the board.
Action may not come again until new board is sworn in next year.

The board will meet in closed session with legal counsel on Tuesday to discuss the proposed ordinance. Other Iowa counties’ carbon pipeline setback ordinances have been met with legal challenges.
First vote will be next Monday, when all supervisors are able to attend.

District 2 incumbent Ben Rogers was elected for a fifth term to the three-member Linn County Board of Supervisors. State Rep. Kirsten Running-Marquardt will fill the other open seat.
The board voted 2-1 to oppose the amendment, which is on next week’s ballot. They join the Cedar Rapids Community School District and Johnson County Supervisors in passing a resolution encouraging Iowans to vote “no.“
