Linn County paid $150,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a former legal assistant against the county and initially against two prosecutors for sexual harassment and retaliation. Nearly half of the settlement was paid to the former employee’s lawyer for legal fees.

Also in this week’s Government Notes, the Linn-Mar school board will vote on the district’s next fiscal year budget Monday.

Linn County Supervisors this week unanimously approved the budget for fiscal year 2026, which spans July 1 through June 30, 2026. The levy rate will decrease, but residential and agricultural property owners can still expect to see an increase in their Linn County tax bill.

The bill, Senate File 75, requires counties that house a public university to elect county supervisors by districts, rather than having members elected at-large. Further, special elections will now be required to fill most board vacancies in Iowa’s largest counties.

The district, previously represented by Democrat Sami Scheetz, covers much of southeast Cedar Rapids.

State legislator Sami Scheetz, a Democrat from Cedar Rapids, was chosen Tuesday to replace outgoing supervisor Ben Rogers.

The program will focus on those experiencing withdrawal after the use of alcohol or opiates.

The appointment process continues, although a possible change in relevant state law looms. A total of 17 people applied for the vacancy that opens Tuesday on the three-member board.

Applicants this month were sought to replace District 2 Supervisor Ben Rogers, who will resign next week after 16 years on the board.

Eligible Linn County residents who want to be appointed to the Board of Supervisors have until March 23 to submit an application.

A committee of three Linn County elected officials decided Friday it will pursue an appointment to fill the seat that will be vacated by Supervisor Ben Rogers’ resignation.

Ben Rogers, the Linn County supervisor for District 2, announced Monday that he will resign his seat, effective April 1. He has served on the board for 16 years.
