The Iowa City Downtown District wants to bring more retailers selling mensware to the city’s downtown and has doubled the cash incentives in its retail referral program.

Law enforcement responded to an incident at GuideLink Center in Iowa City where an individual began to physically assault staff members after walking into the building. The GuideLink Center will remain closed until 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

The board representing the self-supported municipal improvement district, or SSMID, in the South District is focusing on hiring an executive director and continuing to raise awareness of what this tool could mean for business retention and new opportunities.

Iowa City Public Library patrons will no longer incur fines for returning library materials past their due dates. Overdue fines were eliminated for children’s and teen materials in June 2019.

The Iowa City Church on American Legion Road on the east side of Iowa City was “fully engulfed in flames and smoke” early Saturday morning. The fire remains under investigation.

One of the recommendations of the Gather Here Recreation Master Plan is to close the downtown pool at Robert A. Lee Recreation. The Coralville City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to appoint Keith Jones, a retired banker and longtime city resident, to fill the vacant council seat. Jones was sworn in after the vote and took his seat at the council dais.

Incumbent Jon Green and newcomer V Fixmer-Oraiz advance to the Nov. 8 general election for the Johnson County Board of Supervisors after a primary victory Tuesday. The two Democrats will face Republicans Jammie Bradshaw and Phil Hemingway.

No Republicans ran in the primary, which means Zabner is likely to represent the northern Iowa City district in the Iowa House in 2023.

Iowa City is working with Think Iowa City to spur tourism and economic activity in the city. Think Iowa City will administer a grant program to help fund conferences, tournaments and special events.
