IOWA CITY — The Iowa City Downtown District wants to bring more retailers selling men’s apparel to the city’s downtown.
To do so, the Downtown District has doubled the cash incentives for its retail referral program, ILoveICRetail.
Individuals who refer a store for men's shopping downtown will receive a $1,000 reward if the retailer signs a lease. Residents can earn a $20 downtown gift card if they help the Downtown District connect with business owners.

The ILoveIC Retail Referral Program started in 2021. The initiative works to reward community members for engaging with entrepreneurs who might be interested in opening a shop in downtown Iowa City.
“We have a great opportunity to offer more casual clothes and jeans here, so we're tapping into the alumni and community base to help us outreach,” said Nancy Bird, Downtown District executive director.
There are more than 110 restaurants and bar’s in the city’s downtown and more than 60 retailers, according to the Downtown District.
The referral program will continue through 2023 or until funds expire, according to a news release from the Downtown District.
There is a recruitment tool kit, as well as tips on how to engage shop owners, on the Downtown District’s website, downtowniowacity.com.
If residents refer a different type of retail store that signs a lease, they will receive a $500 reward.
A $10 downtown gift card will be given for referrals that result in a response from the store owner.
