Iowa House Democrats over the weekend re-elected state Rep. Jennifer Konfrst of Windsor Heights to serve as the Iowa House minority leader.

Republican state lawmakers on Thursday chose Sen. Amy Sinclair as the new president of the Iowa Senate following the defeat of current Senate President Jake Chapman in Tuesday’s midterm election.

Lawmakers redrew election districts and created a new and open House District 91 seat — covering parts of Johnson County, including Clear Creek up to Swisher, and all of Iowa County, including Williamsburg, Marengo and North English.

Democratic incumbent Rep. Amy Nielsen is seeking her fourth term. She is running against Republican Wayne Grell and Libertarian Jacob Wenck. House District 85 includes Solon, North Liberty and parts of northeastern Johnson County.

Republican Heather Hora of Washington is running against Democrat Eileen Beran of Kalona for the two-year term to represent House District 92, which covers all of Washington County and parts of Johnson County.

Republican newcomer Anne Fairchild is running against Democratic community organizer Sami Scheetz for the Iowa House District 78 seat, which largely encompasses southeast Cedar Rapids.

Three groups spent more than $636,000 on House Republican primary campaigns, and the groups’ favored candidates won at least 14 of 17 races, including three incumbents.

First-term state Rep. Molly Donahue faces competition from newcomer Austin Frerick in the race to represent much of eastern Cedar Rapids and Marion in Iowa Senate District 37.
