It was a cool, rainy Friday night across much of the state for Week 3 of the Iowa high school football season. In other words, football weather.

Cedar Rapids Prairie 34, 4A No. 3 Cedar Falls 21

With their backs up against the wall, the Cedar Rapids Prairie Hawks came out fighting.

Saddled with a pair of losses by a combined four points to start the season, Prairie received no break from the schedule makers as third-ranked Cedar Falls came to town Friday. But the Hawks weathered a swift opening punch and stormed back to stun the Tigers, 34-21, at John Wall Field. The Hawks racked up 502 yards of total offense.

'We were basically in two ballgames, five plays away from being 2-0,' Prairie head coach Mark Bliss said. 'Our kids accepted where we're at and made a concerted effort to get better this week.'

After two close losses, Cedar Rapids Prairie runs past No. 3 Cedar Falls for its first win of the season

4A No. 9 Cedar Rapids Washington 6, Marshalltown 0

The Washington Warriors made the trip eastward on Highway 30 wet, chilled, muddy ...

And still unbeaten.

Henry Clymer and Reid Ortiz connected for a 23-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter, and it held up as Class 4A ninth-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington slid past Marshalltown, 6-0, Friday night at Leonard Cole Field.

'We made one more play than they did,' Warriors Coach Maurice Blue said.

3A No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier 30, Clear Creek Amana 7

There have been a number of memorable plays in the 22 years of Cedar Rapids Xavier football.

Senior Jaxon Rexroth cemented his place in Saints history with a run for the ages in Friday's Class 3A District 6 opener against Clear Creek Amana. With the first half winding down, Rexroth dropped to pass and looked up to see Wisconsin commit T.J. Bollers lining him up for a sack.

If escaping Bollers wasn't enough, Rexroth moved on and broke three or four more tackles to complete a spectacular 50-yard scoring run. That put the No. 2 Saints up 14-0 at halftime and they went on to a 30-7 win on a rainy night at Saints Field.

3A No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier sinks Clear Creek Amana to improve to 3-0

Briggs Duwe stepped to the huddle calm and confident.

Decorah's senior quarterback reassured his teammates that they had a little more late-game magic to conjure up after opening the season with a pair of one-point victories.

'All of our games have come down to the last drive,' Duwe said. 'The first thing I said when we got in the huddle was, 'Hey, guys, relax. We've been here before.' The last two games have been just like that and we did our thing. We got it done.'

Duwe orchestrated a 74-yard drive and hit Cael Luzum for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 1:19 left, lifting the Vikings to a 31-27 victory over sixth-ranked West Delaware in a Class 3A District 3 prep football opener Friday night at Viking Stadium.

A No. 2 Iowa City Regina 62, North Cedar 0

No. 2 Regina faced a football opponent that was actually on its schedule for the first time this season, defeating North Cedar Friday night, 62-0.

'Our kids really just want to take advantage, especially this year, of any day they let us practice or play,' Regina Coach Marv Cook said. 'We're going to try to improve each and every day collectively. They know if they do that, they'll be moving in the right direction.'

Senior tailback Theodor Kolie, who moved to Iowa City from Illinois in fourth grade after coming to the United States from Guinea when he was 8, carried the ball five times for 116 yards and four touchdowns.

'After a big win like this it's important to take care of myself,' Kolie said of his recovery plan that includes eating healthy and lifting on Sunday after a day off to rest.

'We've just been practicing really hard and taking every practice and game to work together and get better.'

Along with Kolie's four first-half scores, the Regals (2-1) added rushing scores from quarterback Ashton Cook and Levi Quinlan to go with a 5-yard reception from Cook to Alec Wick for a 48-0 halftime advantage.

Two more scores in the fourth quarter from Jonathan Goedken and Gentry Dumont finished it off.

4A No. 2 Southeast Polk 69, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 13

In the first half alone, the Rams rushed for 288 yards and five TDs.

Defensively, the Rams held the J-Hawks to just 27 rushing yards, 32 passing yards and just three first downs in the first half. The Rams led 56-6 at halftime and a continuous clock ran the entire second half.

Southeast Polk crushes Cedar Rapids Jefferson to move to 3-0

2A No. 9 Mount Vernon 22, Center Point-Urbana 8

Brady Ketchum completed 22 of 35 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns as Mount Vernon rolled to a 22-8 win in Center Point.

Ketchum connected with Collin Swantz seven times for 87 yards, including TD passes of 23 and 4 yards. Ryan Naeve also caught a TD pass from Ketchum, covering 3 yards.

Trenton Pitlik rushed 22 times for 119 yards for Mount Vernon (3-0).

Cascade 21, 1A No. 9 West Branch 14

CASCADE 21, WEST BRANCH 14 — Jack Menster, Cael McDermott and Logan Otting each found the end zone for the Cougars (2-1) in a game played at Solon.

The Bears scored twice in the final five minutes — and were within 32 yards of doing so again — but Cascade held the Bears on four consecutive downs and ran out the clock.

3A No. 5 Washington 29, Fort Madison 7

A week after putting his stamp on a victory over Solon, quarterback Trashaun Willis led the Demons to a win at home.

He went 72 yards to the end zone on a sweep and also hit Spencer Sotelo on a TD pass one second before half for a 15-0 lead.

Demons defensive back Ethan Zieglowsky had two interceptions, taking one in for a score.

8P No. 7 Montezuma 56, New London 20

Eddie Burgess did a little bit of everything for No. 7-ranked Braves.

He completed 15 of 23 passes for 263 yards and rushed the ball 24 times for 181 yards. For good measure, Burgess added a 65-yard kickoff return in the first half.

8P No. 8 Springville 82, Clarksville 0

Spencer DeMean totaled 217 yards on 20 rushes and scored four touchdowns as the Orioles rolled at home.

DeMean scored on runs of 9, 22, 63 and 15 yards as Springville improved to 3-0.

Grant Gloeckner ran for 103 yards and a TD on six carries and added fumble recovery in the end zone. Alex Koppes returned a kick 55 yards for a TD and Bryce Ripple had a punt return for the TD.

Bryce Wilson attempted and completed just one pass, but it went 24 yards for a TD to Luke Menster.

Independence 34, Oelwein 0

Marcus Beatty rushed for three touchdowns and was on the receiving end of another as the Mustangs won the Battle for the Highway 150 Trophy.

Beatty rushed for 67 yards and caught two passes for 55 yards, including a 41-yarder from Mitchell Johnson to open the scoring.

He scored on runs of 25, 11 and 9 yards.

A No. 4 Wapsie Valley 21, A No. 7 MFL MarMac 20

Trevor Sauerbrei's 4-yard touchdown run with 2:40 left lifted No. 4 Wapsie Valley (3-0) in Monona.

The seventh-ranked Bulldogs (2-1) had taken a 20-14 lead with 5:24 left.

2A No. 2 Williamsburg 54, Davis County 14

Raiders Coach Curt Ritchie earned his 200th career win with a road victory.

English Valleys 58, Tri-County 0

Beau Flander rushed for 164 yards and scored five touchdowns as the Bears won in Thornburg.

Flander scored on runs of 34, 6, 14, 1 and 4 yards.

Crestwood 14, North Fayette Valley 12

Carter Henry rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns and completed 11 of 17 passes for 140 yards to lead Crestwood.

Liam McIntyre rushed for 194 and Lukas Lau added 104 rushing yards and a TD for NFV.

Lone Tree 42, WACO 6

Alex Viner rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns as the Lions won in Wayland.

Cade Shield added 135 rushing yards and two scores and Cade Patterson for twice, on a reception and an interception.

Waterloo West 37, Anamosa 14

The Raiders roared to a 14-0 lead on Grahm Humpal's TD pass to Colton Borst and Alex Casey's 1-yard run, but the Wahawks rallied with 23 points in the second and third quarters to pull away.

No. 1 Dowling falls to Johnston

Johnston pulled off a stunning 18-15 win Friday over 4A No. 1 West Des Moines Dowling.

The Dragons took a 15-0 lead in the first quarter, including quarterback Jack Rutz taking off on a 37-yard TD run on fourth-and-3.

Karter Kriegel came up with a fourth-quarter interception for Johnston (2-1) on second-and-goal and Nick Nyren tacked on a late field goal to seal the upset.

SEP raises money for derecho relief

Not often does the most impactful moment of a football game take place before the opening kickoff. But at Kingston Stadium Friday evening, that's exactly what happened.

During pregame warmups, team captains from both Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Southeast Polk met at midfield. There, Southeast Polk presented a $5,050 check to Jefferson to aid in derecho relief. The Class 4A second-ranked Rams won the game, 69-13.

'It's funny, actually it was my father-in-law, he's a longtime community member and he had an idea,' Southeast Polk Coach Brad Zelenovich said. 'He's been a longtime booster and he brought it to our attention. He talked about all the obstacles that everyone's facing in this area of the state and the (Cedar Rapids) community, it got hit hard.'

Thursday: Assumption blasts Marion

There has not been much suspense for Davenport Assumption's football program the first three weeks. The Knights prefer it that way.

Assumption tallied three touchdowns in the opening quarter and forced three turnovers before halftime on its way to a 42-0 rout over Marion Thursday night in the district opener at a soggy Brady Street Stadium.

In three games against Davenport West, Davenport Central and Marion, Coach Wade King's squad has outscored them 110-0 in the first half. For the second straight contest, the opponent didn't collect a first down before intermission.

'These three weeks are all teams we thought we should beat,' Assumption senior Simon Weitz said. 'Marion is not that bad of a team and we put a good game together.'

Marion (1-1), five days removed from a 29-20 win over Center Point-Urbana, had only one of its 18 offensive snaps go for more than 3 yards in the opening half. It didn't collect its initial first down until midway through the third quarter and finished with 47 yards of offense.

Sophomore quarterback Alex Mota, who racked up nearly 300 total yards against CPU, never could get comfortable against Assumption's defense. Mota had just 7 rushing yards on seven attempts and was 0-of-9 passing with two interceptions.

It is the first 3-0 start for Assumption since 2011.

'We've got a real senior-dominated team and they're just grateful to be able to play,' King said.

The Knights finished with 345 total yards, including 124 through the air.

Postponed games

Field conditions have forced a few Gazette area games to be pushed back to Saturday.

In 8-Player, GMG will host HLV and BGM will host Gladbrook-Reinbeck at 5 p.m. Saturday. Top-ranked Don Bosco's trip to Central City was moved to 2 p.m. Saturday. Also, Midland's game against Elkader Central will now start at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dyersville Beckman.

In Class 1A, No. 9 West Branch and Cascade are still playing Friday, but the game has been moved to the turf field at Solon for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
