HACAP Food Reservoir’s 20th Annual Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food & Fund Drive will kick off today and run through the end of September, collecting donations both online and in person for the nearly 40,000 in the community who struggle with food security

The organization is looking for volunteers to bolster their local food rescue operations and tackle summer produce initiatives. Volunteers transport over 40,000 lbs. of food weekly to agencies throughout Johnson County that serve food-insecure populations.

Every dollar donated will enable the CommUnity Food Bank to purchase five pounds of food. Each year, this event raises enough funding to stock the shelves for nearly six months. Registration is online and ends today.

Table to Table, a Johnson County nonprofit that rescues 2.5 million pounds of food each year and delivers it at no charge to local pantries and social service agencies, is kicking off a celebration of 25 years and fundraising for construction expenses with a free-to-the-publicpen house on Thursday.

Programs that put money and additional food benefits in people’s pockets, and made an unprecedented dent in American poverty, are either ending or could end soon.

The public is invited to skate at Xtream Arena for one night only, Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Those who bring an item to donate will receive free skate rentals.

To date, the pantry and fund have helped more than 20 families, many several times, as the pandemic severely impacted households.
