More than 200 Kennedy High School students enrolled in Freshman Seminar — a new and optional class this year — will get a little more guidance in starting their high school journey. The class, also being offered at Jefferson and Washington high schools, aims to teach ninth-graders about career opportunities and how they can explore their interests.

Cedar Rapids Xavier started the Class 4A boys’ golf season at South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo Thursday, setting a school record with 289 to win the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet.

Harrison Hartke fired 1-under 69 Wednesday at Elmcrest Country Club for a four-round total of 287 to win the Pribyl boys’ open division title. Hayley Morris claimed the girls’ open championship with 238 total, winning by 15 strokes.

High school baseball all-conference selections are being released. The first set are the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi and Valley divisions. Keep checking in for more.

Postseason play will be at full throttle, starting Friday. Class 4A and 3A opens substate play. Cedar Rapids Prairie, Iowa City High and Iowa City Liberty are all No. 1 seeds in 4A. Marion is a top seed in 3A.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the Class 3A and 4A substate pairings that begin July 11. The 1A and 2A districts and substates have already been released and start July 5. Here’s some matchups to of Gazette area Iowa High School Baseball teams.

Iowa City West scored four runs in the top of the 7th for a 12-11 comeback victory in the opener. The Trojans jumped to an early lead and staved off a Cedar Rapids Washington rally for a 4-3 win in the nightcap, earning a baseball doubleheader sweep Friday night.

Benton won 26 games each of the last two summers and is working on its third straight winning season. It would be the longest streak since five in a row from 2012-16.
