With Friday’s football schedule release by the Iowa High School Athletic Association, The Gazette is offering a one-time, 10-game, nine-week tour of the best games in our circulation area, with no stadium visited more than once.

Sixteen boys’ basketball teams, most of them from the Mississippi Valley Conference and Central Iowa Metro League, will participate in the inaugural MVC-CIML Showdown. It’s a two-date event in January, with teams playing at an undetermined site in the Des Moines area and a full day of games at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids.

Donovan Slick-Driscoll, Tre Duffie, Dawson Dougherty and Anthony Franklin churned out the state’s second-fastest boys’ 400-meter relay thus far this season, circling the Kingston Stadium oval in 43.05 seconds Saturday at the Draxton-Stiers/Wilkinson Invitational track and field meet.
