Lisbon heavyweight Wyatt Smith wrestled behind a state medalist his first two years. The junior stepped into the lineup this season and won his state debut Thursday.

Andrew Ossman’s two free throws with 18 seconds left in overtime gave Alburnett a 64-62 win over New London in a good boys’ basketball game Monday night.

The top-ranked pound-for-pound wrestler in the Class of 2002, Kylie Welker, was the first signee for the Iowa women’s wrestling program. Soon after, Bettendorf’s Ella Schmit and Wyoming Seminary Prep’s (Pa.) Reese Larramendy followed, showing the talent is already flocking to the Iowa program.

Austin Hilmer scored 29 points as North Linn boys’ basketball rolled to an 85-49 win at Alburnett. It’s the team’s fourth-straight win after seeing a 107-game regular-season win streak snapped.

Alburnett freshman Rowdy Neighbor demonstrated his rough and ready side, dominating his way to the 106-pound title and joining teammate Carson Klostermann as champion at Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s J-Hawk Invitational. Iowa City High’s Ben Kueter earned the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler award.

Alburnett is coming off its second team title this wrestling season. Talented freshmen have meshed with a good nucleus of returners for more success.

Clubhouse renovations were underway Monday at the semi-private golf club in Northeast Cedar Rapids. New owners said the course plans to maintain golf operations, updating the bar and lounge area inside the clubhouse for next year.

The Hawks have won five of the last six team titles in state events. They have picked up where they left off after a sweep of traditional and dual crowns last season. Also, Alburnett claimed a tournament title Saturday and Battle of Waterloo is set.
