Four Gazette area first-team all-state volleyball players return in 2023: Clear Creek Amana’s Bliss Beck, Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Libby Fandel, Marion’s Michaela Goad and Mount Vernon’s Chloe Meester.
The Gazette’s 2023 Female Athlete of the Year is Peyton Robinson of Lisbon. She captured 16 varsity letters, won a state track and field relay title and has played in (at least) four state softball tournaments. She will play volleyball at Wartburg College.
Even The Gazette’s Athlete of the Year candidates who are honorable mention seem pretty amazing. You’d be making a safe wager betting on their futures.

Meet the 2022 IGCA all-state volleyball teams. Marion’s Avery Van Hook, Mount Vernon’s Madeleine Miller are the state players of the year in Class 4A and Class 3A, respectively. They are joined on the Elite team by Iowa City Liberty’s Cassidy Hartman and Western Dubuque’s Ella Meyer.

A state-tournament rookie team, seventh-ranked Ankeny Christian pulled off an improbable comeback to capture the Class 1A state volleyball championship in five sets over No. 4 Gladbrook-Reinbeck (21-25, 19-25, 28-26, 26-24, 15-10) in Thursday’s finale at Xtream Arena.
