The Wamac Conference had some Elite setting this season, wouldn’t you say?
Marion’s Avery Van Hook and Mount Vernon’s Madeleine Miller were named the Class 4A and Class 3A state volleyball players of the year, according to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association, which released its all-state teams Tuesday morning.
Van Hook and Miller are joined on the nine-player Elite team by Cassidy Hartman of Iowa City Liberty and Ella Meyer of Western Dubuque.

All four are seniors.
Lily Dykstra of Urbandale is the state player of the year.
Van Hook, bound for the University of South Dakota, averaged 2.22 kills, 8.81 assists and 2.50 digs per set as Marion (35-7) reached the 4A state quarterfinals. She posted a kill efficiency of .321.
Miller was equally adept at the net in setting and attacking. The University of New Mexico recruit averaged 1.71 kills (on a .503 kill efficiency), 10.23 assists and 2.47 digs per set. Mount Vernon (35-6) was a 3A state semifinalist.
Hartman earned Elite all-state honors for the third consecutive year after leading Liberty (33-8) to its first state championship in any team sport; the Lightning captured the 5A title. Bound for the University of Northern Iowa, the versatile Hartman posted 4.98 kills and 3.97 digs per set and owned a .348 efficiency.
Meyer was a member of Western Dubuque’s 2021 Class 4A championship team; the Bobcats (25-11) were 4A semifinalists this time around. She averaged 6.75 digs per set and has pledged to Western Illinois University.
That area foursome highlights a crew of 14 first-team all-staters:
* Liberty’s Shelby Kimm joins Hartman on the 5A first team.
* Led by Van Hook and Meyer, seven of the eight 4A first-teamers are from The Gazette’s circulation area. Libby Fandel of state-champion Cedar Rapids Xavier is on the list, along with Bliss Beck of runner-up Clear Creek Amana, Michaela Goad of Marion, Libby Lansing of Western Dubuque and Alivia Schulte of West Delaware.
* Hard-hitting Chloe Meester of Mount Vernon joins Miller on the 3A team, as does Aubrey Gates of Union Community.
* Nia Howard of Springville and Jadyn Rausch of North Tama are honored in 1A.
Xavier Coach Austin Filer, who announced at state that this was his final year with the Saints, was tabbed as the 4A coach of the year. Xavier reached the state tournament in all of Filer’s seven seasons, winning 4A titles in 2020 and 2022. He posted a record of 214-45 in his career, 32-4 this season.
