Class 1A eighth-ranked Wilton downed No. 7 Iowa City Regina, 21-14, Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Iowa high school state football playoffs in Iowa City. Wilton makes its first appearance in the state semifinal round next Friday at the UNI-Dome.

The Class 3A ninth-ranked Spartans defeated No. 5 Benton Community, 34-27, in the opening round of the Class 3A Iowa high school football playoffs Friday.

It was an opportunity for Cedar Rapids Xavier to get right. Class 4A No. 10 Xavier put the throttle down Friday, defeating District 3 foe Burlington, 49-6, at Saints Field in a regular-season finale.

It was a big win for No. 9 Iowa City Regina, 20-8 over second-ranked Wilton, albeit a touch bittersweet.

Iowa City High decided to skip the drama Friday. The Little Hawks, powered by three touchdowns apiece from sophomore Dawson Kahl and Bobby Bacon, won their fourth consecutive game, 49-7, over Davenport Central.

Offense. Defense. Special teams. There wasn’t an area of weakness for Marion in a 31-7 Class 4A District 2-opening victory over Waterloo East.

For the fourth straight season, The Boot is staying in Iowa City High’s possession. The Little Hawks beat Iowa City West 40-39 on a two-point conversion from quarterback Bobby Bacon to Jack Lampe with 22 seconds remaining.

A combination of steady offense, turnover-inducing defense and a little trickery proved to be the winning formula for Iowa City Regina against Mediapolis.
