A Marion man was arrested Monday on charges that he robbed a Marion gas station at gunpoint in May.

The chief state medical examiner on Friday testified the single bullet that killed 17-year-old Cristian Upah during a marijuana robbery last May did extensive damage to his diaphragm muscle, intestines and lower right back muscle. The gunshot caused “significant” blood loss and collapsed his left lung.

Witnesses, who lived in duplex where Cristian Upah was fatally shot outside in the yardlast year, said they heard a gunshot and female screaming and then saw Keyun McGowan running from the scene.

The girlfriend of Cristian Upah, who was fatally shot last year in a marijuana robbery, testified she can’t identify 17-year-old Keyun McGowan, who is on trial this week. But McGowan’s best friend identified him as the shooter during his testimony Wednesday.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department is asking for help finding a suspect in an armed bank robbery earlier this month.

A federal judge sentenced a Cedar Rapids man to more than 55 years in prison for his 12-day crime spree, which included robbing seven businesses in November 2020. He had seven previous felony convictions.

A judge Tuesday sentenced Alfred Younes, 49, to five years in prison for helping his son, Ali Younes, 20, avoid prosecution for robbery and trying to kill a woman last year on the UI campus and escape to Jordan. His wife also was sentenced to five years for helping their son.

A Storm Lake man, who kidnapped his wife by gunpoint and led police on a foot pursuit through an Iowa City parking ramp last year, pleaded to guilty Wednesday and faces 40 years in prison. His trial was set to start next Tuesday.

A Storm Lake man accused of kidnapping his wife by gunpoint and planning to take her to Chicago last December was convicted Sept. 26 for assaulting another inmate in the Johnson County Jail in July. His trial for kidnapping is set for Oct. 24.

He and his wife face up to 5 years in prison.

Lamont’e O’Neal, 20, is in custody in Cook County, Ill., on unrelated charges and will be extradited later to face charges in Johnson County, police said.
