NORTH LIBERTY - A Williamsburg man has been arrested in connection with an accidental self-inflicted shooting in North Liberty last week.
North Liberty police officers were called to 35 Golfview Drive on Jan. 16 for a report of a shooting. There, they found the 19-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg that shattered his right femur. The shooting victim required several surgeries, police said.
While investigating the shooting, Nicholas P. Wombacher, 19, of Williamsburg, told investigators that a black man wearing a black hoodie opened the driver's side door of a car and shot the victim. Authorities in Johnson County would go on to search for the alleged suspect.
However, police later learned that Wombacher had been 'messing around” with the hammer on his revolver - knowing the gun was loaded - and the gun accidentally discharged.
Police said Wombacher does not have a permit to carry weapons.
Wombacher was arrested and now faces charges of reckless use of a firearm causing serious injury, a Class C felony; carrying weapons, an aggravated misdemeanor; and false reports of an indictable offense, a serious misdemeanor.
