CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids man faces an attempted murder charge in connection with the Jim's Food shooting from earlier this month.
Cedar Rapids responded to the grocery store at 812 Sixth St. SW after hearing gunshots around 9:20 p.m. March 4. Police also received several 911 calls.
According to the Linn County Attorney's Office, blood and a shell casing was found in the parking lot. A short time later, the victim - a 24-year-old man - showed up at St. Luke's Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Police said the victim identified 25-year-old Dontay L. Hill as the shooter. The victim told police Hill shot at him twice, with one round striking him in the leg.
Surveillance video from the adjacent Breakfast House was reviewed and corroborated the victim's version of events, authorities said.
Hill was found at Mercy Hospital several hours after the shooting with a gunshot wound to his hand. He gave different versions of what happened with 'several inconsistencies,” according to the criminal complaint.
Police have said the victim was 'targeted,” but police have not disclosed a motive behind the shooting. The criminal complaint does not offer an explanation for Hill's gunshot wound.
Hill has been charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
