It was the inspired play of freshman Ellah Derrer, especially at critical moments, that allowed No. 2 Davenport Assumption (31-7) to advance with a 25-22, 19-25, 25-15, 32-30 victory over Osage in the Class 3A state volleyball quarterfinals at Xtream Arena.

No. 8-ranked East Buchanan didn't complete one pass, but ran the ball, unofficially, for 500 yards in an impressive, 57-21, win over 10th-ranked Alburnett in the Class A playoffs before an overflow crowd at Jim Carver Field.

Linn-Mar senior TJ Jackson had a homecoming game for the ages. It started with him taking back the opening kickoff 88 yards for a score. That was followed shortly after by a 51-yard scoring pass from Austin Waller. He capped his short night with a 90-yard punt return for a score as the Lions rolled to a 56-6 victory over Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
