The Cedar Rapids Xavier girls’ basketball team was scheduled to host Marion in a Class 4A regional semifinal, but a scoreboard issue moved the game to Marion. The change appeared to throw the Saints off early, but an early second-half surge led by senior Kyla Mason and sophomore Libby Fandel allowed the defending state champions to hold off the Wolves, 54-47.

Iowa high school boys’ state swimming: Iowa City High teammates Joe Polyak (200-yard individual medley) and John Weigel (100 freestyle) saw their extra work pay off with state championships. Waukee defended its team title with 314 points.

Linn-Mar freshman Hudson Huberg is already establishing himself as one of Iowa’s top swimmers ahead of this week’s district meet.

Fifth-ranked Linn-Mar won three of the 11 events contested, but used their superior depth to rack up the points and win their first Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ swimming championship in six seasons.

Decisions by some Linn-Mar swimmers to compete for club teams instead provided openings for others and they have taken advantage. Entering Saturday’s Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet, the Lions are ranked fifth in the state power rankings.

The Linn-Mar Aquatic Center is one of six Iowa high school boys’ swimming district sites statewide on Feb. 4.
