Seven straight years, the Class 2A girls’ state cross country race has been won by a member of the Hostetler family. The master of a tactical race who gets stronger as the competition continues, Danielle earned 2A titles in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Here are five Gazette-area games to watch in Class 5A, 4A and 3A Iowa high school softball quarterfinals.

Iowa City High notched wins over Class 3A No. 1 Western Dubuque, previously ranked Waukee Northwest and Linn-Mar, which received votes. The Little Hawks returned to the rankings in the No. 9 spot in 4A.

Mid-Prairie was a state semifinalist last season. The Golden Hawks are 5-2 this season, beating Bettendorf, 2A No. 4 Williamsburg and West Branch in their last three games and replacing Van Meter as 2A’s No. 1 team in the IHSBCA rankings.

State track has concluded and some Iowa high school baseball programs will welcome back regulars that competed over the weekend. Here is a look ahead to some noteworthy matchups this week.

Owen Douglas sprinted to a Class 2A 200-meter title Saturday during the state track and field meet at Drake Stadium, then anchored the Raiders’ gold medal-winning 400-meter relay. All those points proved to be highly consequential. Williamsburg tied Mediapolis for the 2A team crown — giving it its first state track and field team title since 2002.

Friday’s Class 2A boys’ state track and field roundup: Iowa football recruit Derek Weisskopf of Williamsburg repeated as the high jump champion.

Mid-Prairie’s Danielle Hostetler powered past second-place finisher Hillary Trainor of Sumner-Fredericksburg as she entered the backstretch and never looked back, finishing in a gold-worthy time of 10:20.73 for her third straight state championship in the Class 2A 3,000-meter run.

The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released its preseason rankings. Monday marks the first day of official competition. West Des Moines Dowling (4A), Western Dubuque (3A), Van Meter (2A) and Remsen St. Mary’s (1A) open the season top-ranked.
