Marion senior Owen Puk turned down a chance to report to Florida International early with hopes of leading the Indians to their first state baseball title. Puk, Gage Franck and a strong senior group helped lead Marion to new heights.

Marion’s Gage Franck raced home and slid safely just ahead of the tag on Myles Davis’ sacrifice fly to claim a 7-6 victory and the Class 3A state baseball title over Dubuque Wahlert. It is Marion’s first state baseball crown.

Second-seeded Council Bluffs St. Albert build a six-run lead and held on for a 7-5 victory over No. 4-seed Lansing Kee for the Class 1A state baseball championship.

Council Bluffs St. Albert tallied 10 runs on 10 hits and Jeff Miller threw five scoreless innings to defeat Alburnett, 10-0, in a Class 1A state semifinal.

Lansing Kee manufactured a run in the seventh to force extra innings and used three in the ninth to beat top-seeded Remsen St. Mary’s, 5-3, in nine innings, returning to the Class 1A state baseball final for the first time since 2011.
