Negative mental health outcomes in the aftermath of a natural disaster are common, and the emotional and psychological toll can linger for years. Recovery can begin once they start to rebuild -- but what happens if you’re unable to start rebuilding?

Kimmy Schmadeke has now filed four appeals for individual assistance to FEMA with no results so far. She plans on filing a fifth appeal in the future.

The city of Marion plans to mark the anniversary of the derecho on Tuesday, Aug. 10, with a series of events intended to honor the anniversary and reflect on the progress that has been made.

Iowans are advised to be aware of deadline for filing insurance claims for damage caused by Aug. 10, 2020, derecho and to be in contact with insurers if extensions are needed.
