Labor Day weekend may be missing its usual packed slate of college football this year, but Friday still had a full night of Iowa high school football scheduled.

Cedar Rapids Washington 28, 4A No. 6 Cedar Rapids Kennedy 21

Washington's first-half brilliance was enough to hold off Class 4A sixth-ranked Kennedy, 28-21, in a Mississippi Valley Conference cross-divisional football game Friday night at Kingston Stadium.

'That's probably the biggest win I've probably had in my life,' said Washington quarterback Henry Clymer, who passed for 230 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for another.

The victory was the fifth straight for Washington, which improved to 2-0 this season.

The Warriors take down 4A No. 6 Kennedy at Kingston.

4A No. 9 Iowa City West 56, Iowa City High 20

When Grahm Goering ran the opening kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown, Iowa City West could smell the boot. So to speak.

When Goering caught a touchdown pass in the final minute of the first half, the Trojans more or less could wear the boot. For another year.

Impressive doesn't even begin to describe West in Friday night's 56-20 smackdown of rival Iowa City High at Trojans Field. Its offense was unstoppable, its defense plenty up to the task of stopping an opponent that some thought might have the advantage in the size and physicality department.

City High

3A No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier 24, Linn-Mar 20

Cedar Rapids Xavier has always been an opportunistic football team.

In Friday night's game against Linn-Mar, the Saints more than lived up to that reputation.

Xavier, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, recovered four Linn-Mar fumbles and turned them into 17 points, to hold on for a thrilling 24-20 win at Linn-Mar Stadium.

And even with the 17 points off turnovers, the Saints got another break in the final two minutes when an apparent go-ahead 78-yard touchdown pass from McKade Jelinek to Cam Guenther was called back due to a block in the back penalty well behind the play.

After the penalty, the Saints were able to hold on downs and escape with the win, moving to 2-0. Linn-Mar fell to 0-2.

3A No. 2

2A No. 2 Williamsburg 40, Benton Community 22

Carson Huedepohl didn't take the field with visions of a big performance.

Williamsburg's sophomore running back was only focused on how he could contribute to the team's success. He delivered on both accounts.

Huedepohl scored four touchdowns and helped Class 2A second-ranked Williamsburg to a 40-22 victory over Benton Community in a prep football game Friday night at Bob Murphy Stadium.

Huedepohl tallied two rushing scores, returned an interception for a TD and then added a receiving TD to ice the game in the fourth.

3A No. 4 Washington 33, 2A No. 9 Solon 18

Solon may be one of the state's finest 0-2 teams, but it is of little consolation as the Spartans fell to Washington.

'I still believe we're a good football team,' Solon first-year coach Lucas Stanton said. 'We're not very consistent right now. That's on us as coaches. There's still a little bit of that newness. Kids getting used to the things that we're doing. I'm confident we'll get there.'

A week after falling short, 17-14, to Class 2A second-ranked Williamsburg, the Spartans welcomed Class 3A sixth-ranked Washington to town. The Demons, fresh off a Week 1 upset of Bettendorf, piled up the yards in bunches.

Solon hung around with a consistent offensive approach that kept the Demons' defense on the field, but quarterback Trashaun Willis did it on the ground and through the air as Washington began to seize command by halftime.

Willis connected with Spencer Sotelo for 34 yards on Washington's second possession. Wyatt Stout took an option pitch in from 3 yards out to open the scoring.

The Spartans used a series of runs to move the ball near midfield. As the first quarter clock wound down, Blake Timmons hit Colton Hoffman with a short pass. Hoffman ran toward the sideline, picked up a block and raced 55 yards into the end zone to tie the score.

'It was a great play by Blake,' Hoffman said. 'He just threw it up for me to catch it and I think I made one defender miss and I just made a play on it.'

The Demons didn't waste time responding. Willis hit Stout on a wheel route for 37 yards. On the next snap, Stout took the ball 40 yards straight up the middle for a 14-7 lead.

Solon took the first 7:34 off the clock in the third quarter, but that drive stalled at the Washington 15, resulting in a missed field goal.

The Demons put the game away early in the fourth. After converting a fourth-and-6 on a shovel pass to Stout, Willis found Sotelo from 19 yards out.

MFL MarMac 35, Alburnett 13

After winning 34-6 at North Tama last week, Alburnett felt confident hosting 1-0 MFL MarMac in Week 2.

'I wasn't expecting that, to be honest,' said head coach Rich Velazquez after the Pirates fell to the Bulldogs, 35-13.

'I thought we matched up well after watching film.'

MFL MarMac started the game with a score when sophomore Karter Decker beat the Pirates to the edge and housed the opening kickoff for a 75-yard touchdown.

'There were a few things that we just let happen, like the kickoff for a touchdown, and it just didn't work out,' Velazquez said. 'We'll have to go back and try to make something work.'

The Bulldogs took a 13-0 lead just a minute, 24 seconds later when Cullen McShane scored from the Alburnett 5.

The home team then buckled down and responded with a 60-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Hunter Caves to Kale Rose with 7:11 left in the first quarter.

MFL MarMac scored the lone touchdown of the second and third quarters when Havlicek scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper, extending the Bulldog advantage to 21-6 with 7:30 left in the half.

Trailing by two scores headed into the final quarter, the Pirates were unable to halt the Bulldog rushing attack that finished with 183 yards on 35 carries and four touchdowns, including their final tally when Decker scored for the second time on a 28-yard run with 11:51 left in the game.

Alburnett's Carson Klostermann scored the game's final touchdown with 7:30 left.

West Liberty 20, 1A No. 5 West Branch 7

Sixteen years of losing either closely or by blowout to West Branch was snapped Friday night by the West Liberty football team.

On the backs of another record-setting rushing week from Jahsiah Galvan, the Comets finally got the monkey off their back and got the better of the Class 1A No. 5 Bears, 20-7, at Memorial Field.

'These guys get it,' said Jason Iske, the head coach of the Comets. 'They know what these games mean and I think they played hard for it. They deserve it.'

It's the first time in nine meetings West Liberty (2-0) left the field with the taste of victory. The Bears had won the last six contests by 15 points or more.

'We wanted to prove ourselves here,' quarterback Caleb Wulf said.

Fresh off a 244-yard performance in week one against Mediapolis, Galvan eclipsed his career high with 272 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns.

A No. 2 Iowa City Regina 21, 2A No. 3 Clear Lake 20

Nick Wagner and Josh Gaffey stopped a two-point conversion with 55 seconds left as the Regals hung on on the road.

Ashton Cook completed 14 of 29 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns, including a 39-yard strike to Alex Wick to make it 21-6.

Theo Kolie rushed for 103 yards on 22 carries and Wick finished with six catches for 139 yards.

3A No. 8 West Delaware 55, Clinton 6

Wyatt Voelker rushed 12 times for 134 yards and two touchdowns as the Hawks improved to 3-0 with a road victory.

Voelker scored on runs of 1 and 9 yards, playing only the first half.

Logan Woellert returned a punt 55 yards for West Delaware.

Decorah 21, Crestwood 20

The Vikings did it again, scoring a second straight come-from-behind fourth-quarter win thanks to Brody Young.

Down 20-7 with 7:43 left in the game, junior Jacob Pipho returned a kick 92 yards for a touchdown to cut Crestwood's lead to 20-14.

After a defensive stop, the Vikings marched 53 yards and scored on a 1-yard run by Cael Luzum with 1:22 left.

Young's PAT was the winner for the second week in a row.

Mount Vernon 41, Oelwein 20

Brady Ketchum completed 20 of 29 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns as the Mustangs won on the road.

He added 52 rushing yards and two more TDs on the ground.

Collin Swantz caught nine passes for 112 yards, including both TDs from Ketchum.

Anamosa 42, Dyersville Beckman 28

Grahm Humpal rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 184 and two more TDs as the Raiders won in Dyersville.

Humpal completed 11 of 16 passes, including passes for 30 and 34 yards to Colton Borst and Kole Dietiker, respectively.

Alex Casey added 104 yards on 21 rushes, including a 26-yard TD run, helping Caleb Huss to his first win as a coach.

Monticello 49, Bellevue 20

Luke Lambert passed for 269 yards and three touchdowns as the Panthers (2-0) outscored hosts, 35-14, in the second half.

All three of Lambert's TD passes went to Justin Recker, who had eight catches for 168 yards.

Spencer DeMean rushed for three touchdowns and Bryce Wilson added two on the ground as the Orioles rolled.

Luke Menster scored on a punt return and an interception return for Springville and Gave Dlouhy connected on a 40-yard field goal.

Marcus Herold rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns as the Trojans won on the road.

Garrett Kurtenbach caught two passes for two TDs, covering 52 yards.

Kalvin Langreck added two TDs.

Camanche 42, 2A No. 8 Independence 18

Cade Everson rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns for a win at home.

Mitchell Johnson passed for 164 yards and three TDs for the Mustangs, two to Keegan Schmitt. Marcus Beatty added 144 yards on 27 rushes.

North Linn 36, Clayton Ridge 22

Austin Hilmer rushed 21 times for 165 yards and a touchdown and threw for another score to lead the host Lynx.

Brady Klendworth added 116 yards and three TDs on 21 carries, while Cade Haughenbury hauled in eight passes for 44 yards and a TD for the Lynx, who improved to 1-1.

Clayton Ridge dropped to 0-2 this season.

How the ranked teams fared

West Des Moines Dowling proved the Gazette/KGYM pollsters right as the top-ranked Maroons built a 22-0 halftime lead against No. 3 West Des Moines Valley. That held up as the final score.

Elsewhere in Class 4A, Jakob Holcomb's 10-yard TD pass to Dale Stout with 7.6 seconds left gave No. 9 Waukee a 21-17 win over No. 2 Ankeny.

Friday's game between A No. 8 Lisbon and host Wilton has been postponed to 7 p.m Saturday, pending COVID-19 test results.

Due to a potential positive Covid-19 case/team exposure, the MCDPH has recommended that our game be postponed until test results are in. We will plan to play Saturday night @ 7 but a decision will be made by 3:30 tomorrow. If there is not any result the game will be cancelled.September 4, 2020

Wilton announced there is a potential COVID-19 case and further exposure and the Muscatine County Department of Public Health recommended not playing Friday. A decision on whether the game will be played Saturday will be made by 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be canceled if the test results are not in.
