Gary Duffel II pleaded down to the lesser charge of third-degree burglary, a Class D felony, and the charge for assault with intent to commit sexual abuse was dismissed. Duffel in June 2022 was sentenced to prison for an indeterminate term not to exceed five years and less any time already served in jail.
An Iowa City man has been charged with forcing his way into a woman’s apartment with the intent to have sex with her.
According to Coralville police, Gary Leon Duffel II, 53, forced his way into the victim’s apartment on 23rd Avenue in Coralville after midnight Sunday.
Duffel and the victim did not know each other, police said.
Duffel attempted to take the victim’s clothing off against her will with the intent to have sex with her, police said. He broke one of the chairs in the apartment in the course of struggling with her.
Duffel was charged with assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, first-degree burglary and fifth-degree criminal mischief.
First-degree burglary is a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
