Application portal is open for interested local students; informational meeting next week

A proposal that would shift sales taxes in Iowa and, in the process, finally finance the state fund for conservation and water quality projects appears to be on life support at the Iowa Capitol.

The Wild Game Feast at Faith Bible Church in Cedar Rapids isn’t your average church potluck, though it started out as one.

March 4 is National Day of Unplugging from electronic devices. Join in the fun of unplugging that day by taking a night hike through Jakway Forest in Aurora.

The feedback from various business groups, conservative tax policy organizations, and water quality and environmental advocates was not unanimous, but certainly largely in support of Republican state legislators’ varied proposals to lower the state tax on income to a single rate; reduce the state tax on businesses; and create a shift in taxes that provides funding for the long-starved state fund for conservation and water quality projects.

Join Jackson County Conservation on Friday for an owl prowl, a nighttime outing into the woods and calling for in hopes that they call back.

This is a two-week backpacking trip in Colorado in July, designed to engage local students as they acquire lifelong outdoor skills. Students must complete the application process by April 22.

Students are invited to the Hurstville Interpretive Center on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. to learn about how Iowa wildlife survive the winter though games and activities. Register 48 hours in advance.

OWLS (Older Wiser Livelier) is hosting a snowshoe event Feb. 3 at White Water Canyon, the group’s first outing of the year. Registration for the free hike is required by Friday so enough snowshoes are available.

Homeschool families are invited to join a naturalist and learn about the owls of Iowa this Friday at the Hurstville Interpretive Center, part of the KinderNature series.

With Cedar Rapids’ ReLeaf effort and other communities replanting strategies, even more will be planted in 2022 and beyond.

Landowners and interested parties are invited to learn more about what it takes to establish quality habitat to attract and retain various game species. Lunch will be provided by Jackson County Pheasants Forever.
