Rep. Ashley Hinson’s office had a “significant number of young people” call their office on Thursday, a spokesperson said, and “most sounded like they were in middle school.”
“First, we won in Court. Now, we’re going to win at the ballot box,” Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird said on social media.
Monday was the opening day to submit nomination papers for the June primary. The filing deadline to qualify for the primary ballot for state and federal offices in Iowa is March 15.
“It’s vital that we ensure that every dime of these settlement funds goes to help curb this deadly epidemic,” the Marion representative says.
Democrats opposed the bill, arguing its aim is to advance a Republican agenda to further restrict access to abortion.
Asked about how she’d address "sensible gun laws" after the Thursday morning Perry High School shooting, Iowa’s 2nd District U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson said in a town hall meeting, "I think if we could legislate away this kind of hate we would have done it by now."
Supporters argue the bill it would crack down on child trafficking as well as "child recycling," which refers to bad actors bringing children with them across the border multiple times and falsely claiming them as a relative to appear as a family unit.
