Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican, announced this week plans to challenge a 2018 district court decision that halted enforcement of the law which would ban abortions after cardiac activity is detected in a fetus — usually around six weeks. Abortion currently is legal in Iowa until 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The governor also is requesting the courts rehear a recent case on abortion regulations in order to set standards for future restrictions.

The Supreme Court's decision to end the nation’s constitutional protections for abortion has catapulted businesses of all types into the most divisive corner of politics.

Overturning Roe v. Wade was celebrated as a victory for abortion opponents, but it’s not their path to ending the procedure in Iowa. Moving forward, activists say they plan to continue to push for a proposed amendment to the Iowa Constitution.

Several states immediately enacted bans on abortion following the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. In anticipation of more out-of-state patients, abortion providers in the Midwest say they are working to allocate more resources to Iowa and other states where the procedure is still legal.
