Iowa high school football Week 3 roundup: Scores, stats and more
The Gazette
Sep. 13, 2019 7:05 pm, Updated: Aug. 11, 2021 3:35 pm
Week 3 of the Iowa high school football season was another perfect night for football around the state.
Here's everything you need to know from the Gazette area.
4A No. 1 West Des Moines Valley 28, 4A No. 8 Cedar Rapids Kennedy 14
Cedar Rapids Kennedy created plenty of chances.
Capitalizing and converting didn't occur as often as the Cougars would have liked or what they needed to topple a power like West Des Moines Valley.
What Kennedy didn't seize the Tigers did.
Valley scored on three straight series, including two off turnovers in the final quarter, to beat No. 8 Kennedy, 28-14, Friday at Kingston Stadium.

3A No. 4 Solon 44, Marion 0
A veteran quarterback is a luxury every coach wants to have.
Solon is blessed with a four-year regular in Cam Miller. His poise and leadership were on full display Friday night.
Miller completed 10 of 16 passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores as the Spartans dominated from start to finish against Marion.

3A No. 10 Washington 38, 3A No. 9 Iowa City Liberty 31
Washington football coach James Harris was asked just how good his quarterback is and what Luke Turner means to his team.
'He's pretty handy, huh?' Harris said with a sly smile. 'He makes us all look pretty smart. He's the perfect quarterback for our offense. We keep guys active downfield, and if the defense shuts one thing down, we'll go over the top. He's a special kid. We're happy he's playing for the orange and black, no doubt about that.'
That special kid turned in a pretty special performance in the Demons' 38-31 win Friday night over Iowa City Liberty. The dual threat accounted for 258 yards rushing and passing, throwing two touchdown passes, a two-point conversion and running for a TD and two-pointer as Class 3A 10th-ranked Washington moved to 3-0.

2A No. 7 Benton Community 33, Center Point-Urbana 21
See Blake catch. See Blake run.
And by all means, watch Blake kick.
Blake Osborn caught a pair of long touchdown passes from Clayton Krousie, then followed with a couple of field goals — including a 50-yarder — as Class 2A seventh-ranked Benton Community topped Center Point-Urbana, 33-21, in a non-district football game Friday night at Rogers Field.

1A No. 3 West Branch 39, Williamsburg 33
The schedule-makers did West Branch football no favors this year.
The Class 1A No. 3 Bears had two 2A teams on their non-district schedule that are ranked in some state polls, plus a 1A playoff-caliber Wapello squad.
All have been vanquished.
'The thing I like about this team is they are resilient,' longtime West Branch Coach Butch Pedersen said after the Bears held off Williamsburg. 'They don't panic when they have some things go against them.'

Lisbon 36, Belle Plaine 26
October 6, 2017. That was the date the Lisbon football team last recorded a victory. That all changed Friday night at Van Metre Field at Ash Park.
'It's big, it's big,' Lisbon QB Gavin Wollum said. 'This is one of the best feelings in the world.'
Lisbon snapped its 13-game losing streak, defeating Belle Plaine, 36-26, in a Class A non-district matchup.
'The monkey's off the back,' Lisbon Coach Phil Whitman said.

North Linn 28, Alburnett 14
In a slugfest between old rivals, turnovers and field position were the difference. North Linn was the benefactors of both, overcoming a gritty Alburnett team.
'It means a lot, especially to win on their field,' North Linn Coach Jared Collum said. 'Kudos to them defensively. They did a lot of things that we struggled with. We made some good adjustments at halftime up front and we were able to get our running game going in the second half.'
Both teams started quick enough. The Lynx (3-0) fielded a pooch kick on the opening kickoff and returned it to their own 46. A pair of Brennan Becker runs moved the ball into Pirates territory. Quarterback Austin Miller launched a pass downfield to Heath Moyer, who hauled it in at the 10 and spun his way into the end zone. The Lynx utilized the same connection for a 2-point conversion and a quick 8-0 lead.
Not to be outdone, quarterback Parker Gallagher lined up in the shotgun and found Holden Sevening all alone over the middle for a 51-yard score.
From the Pirates 41 late in the first half, North Linn quarterback Austin Miller scanned the field out of the shotgun, tucked the ball and alluded a host of defenders on his way for a touchdown.
Brennan Becker added a 55-yard score down the right sideline as the fourth quarter began.

The Little Hawks (1-2) jumped out to a 21-3 lead midway through the third quarter before Ames (0-3) mounted a powerful comeback that came up short.

Will Esmoil rushed for a pair of touchdowns as the Comets held off the Raiders in Anamosa.
