Iowa high school football roundup: Week 1 scores, stats and more

Summer is over. Football is back. Welcome to Week 1 of the 2019 Iowa high school football season.

The Gazette has in-depth coverage from a handful games around the area Friday night and dozens of other scores.

Here's everything you need to know.

Cedar Rapids Prairie 56, Cedar Rapids Washington 7

More balanced? For sure.

Just as productive? Early indications lean that way.

Cedar Rapids Prairie exploded for seven first-half touchdowns — from four different players — and buried Cedar Rapids Washington, 56-7, in a Metro non-district football game Friday night at John Wall Field.

4A No. 6 Cedar Rapids Kennedy 21, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 10

It took a few drives to get going, but the Cedar Rapids Kennedy offense will be a load to handle this season.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Class 4A No. 9 Cougars piled up 288 rushing yards and fought off Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 21-10, in a non-district football game Friday night at Kingston Stadium.

The offensive trio of quarterback Max White and tailbacks Brandtley Koske and Cairron Hendred did a lot of good things for Kennedy once the offense got its footing.

Linn-Mar 27, Dubuque Senior 20

It wasn't a thing of beauty and there will be a lot to look at this week on film for the Linn-Mar football team.

But, at least the Lions will be looking at a win.

Senior Marcus Orr threw for 242 yards and three scores. He also rushed for another as the Lions held off the Rams in the fourth qarter to win, 27-20.

Iowa City Liberty 23, Iowa City High 20

The Lightning flashed when they needed, defeating cross-school district rival Iowa City High, 23-20, Friday night on the leg of kicker Ryan Nugent.

Quarterback Drake Woody floated a perfect pass to Ben Houselog for 36 yards to set up Iowa City Liberty deep inside Little Hawk territory with less than one minute to go in the season-opening high school football game.

The Lightning inched closer to the goal line with runs from Maxwell Tafolla, and Nugent chipped a 19-yard field goal with six seconds left to give the Lightning their first varsity football win over City High.

3A No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier 35, Iowa City Regina 0

Cedar Rapids Xavier opened a new football season with an impressive new field and some new starters.

Different circumstances, but same results.

With a number of fresh faces in the starting lineup and debuting a new turf surface, the Class 3A second-ranked Saints didn't miss a step in a 35-0 victory over Iowa City Regina on Friday night at Saints Field, winning their 27th straight game.

Washington 27, Marion 6

One team brought back its really good quarterback and its leading receiver. The other team is trying to break in a brand new offense.

Guess which one won.

Yeah, it was that first team, Washington, that ran away in the second half to beat Marion, 27-6, in the season opener for both teams on a perfect Friday night, weather wise, at Thomas Park.

3A No. 3 Solon 35, Mount Vernon 7

Solon struck early and often en route to its 17th straight victory in the Highway 1 rivalry, over Class 2A Mount Vernon.

The Spartans were led by senior quarterback Cam Miller, who completed 13 of 21 passes for 221 yards and one touchdown. Miller added 63 rushing yards and had a TD on the ground as well. Miller's versatility kept Mount Vernon's defense guessing all night.

2A No. 1 Waukon 36, Decorah 7

Class 2A top-ranked Waukon totaled 433 yards of offense, including 265 on the round, as it downed Decorah, 36-7, Friday night in a high school football opener at Waukon.

The Indians scored on their first four possessions, taking the opening kickoff 68 yards. Dawson Baures scored on a 1-yard run with 3:52 to go in the first quarter.

Waukon recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff and scored two plays later on a 39-yard pass from Creed Welch to Baures.

The Indians led 30-7 at halftime.

Decorah's only TD came with 46.8 seconds left on a one-yard run by Andrew Magner.

1A No. 4 West Branch 28, 2A No. 9 West Liberty 26

Gavin Hierseman scored two touchdowns to help the Bears to a season-opening victory on the road.

The Bears scored first on a Tanner Lukavsky interception return. He added another score on a 5-yard pass from Hierseman,

West Liberty scored on the ensuing kickoff as Jahsiah Galvan broke loose down the west sidelines.

The Bears scored on a Hierseman 5-yard run and Lukavsky 4-yard blast to close out the scoring.

West Branch controlled the yardage battle, 356-171.

Independence 49, Oelwein 0

Logan Schmitt passed for 98 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 110 yards and another TD as the Mustangs rolled at home.

Marcus Beatty rushed for 140 yards on eight carries and scored on runs of 4 and 66 yards as Independence totaled 449 yards of offense.

Schmitt completed 8 of 11 passes, including a pair of TD passes to Brayden Holt covering 30 and 13 yards. He also connected with Brady Webb on a 37-yard score.

Maquoketa 42, Anamosa 21

Kannon Coakley scored on a pair of 3-yard runs and Ryne Gruenwald added a 63-yard TD as the Cardinals won at Anamosa.

Nolan McLean passed for 179 yards for the Raiders, including a 97-yard TD to Colton Borst.

Dubuque Wahlert 17, West Delaware 15

Bennett Cutsforth's 29-yard field goal with 28.2 seconds left gave the Golden Eagles their first win since 2017.

West Delaware had taken a 15-14 lead on a Jared Voss 1-yard run in this back-and-forth opener.

Cross Underwood scored first for the Hawks on a 7-yard run, but Wahlert tied the game right before halftime and, on the first play of the third quarter, took a 14-7 lead on a 76-yard run by Gabreil Anstoetter.

Cael Meyer rushed for 88 yards on 23 carries as West Delaware totaled 246 yards, 134 on the ground.

North Linn 53, Starmont 0

Austin Miller completed 9 of 13 passes for 135 yards and five touchdowns as North Linn rolled to a season-opening win at home.

Miller also picked up 71 yards rushing, including a 5-yard TD. Austin Hilmer led the Lynx with seven receptions for 121 yards and three TDs, while Heath Moyer added a 13-yard TD catch.

Monticello 14, Cascade 7

Quarterback Jeff Carlson passed for 217 yards and two first half touchdowns as the Panthers opened with a win at home.

Monticello defeated its neighboring rival for the first time since 2010.

The Panthers were helped by a defense that collected six interceptions, including five in the second half, two by Luke Lambert.

Cascade scored on a 45-yard punt return by Jose Nava.

A No. 5 Edgewood-Colesburg 28, 1A No. 10 Bellevue 7

Parker Rochford completed 6 of 10 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown as the Vikings won on the road.

Keehan Hansel rushed for 129 yards on 30 carries and scored twice.

Springville 45, Tripoli 16

Kyle Koppes passed for four touchdowns and Spencer DeMean returned a kickoff for a score for the second week in a row as the Orioles (2-0) won on the road.

Luke Menster, Jacob Hungate, Grant Gloeckner and Alex Koppes all scored on passes from Koppes.

3A No. 5 North Scott 14, 4A No. 6 Iowa City West 7

Quarterback Jake Matthaides rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns and the Lancers defense contained West most of the night.

Matthaides scored on a 13-yard run in the second quarter, capping an 87-yard drive, and he added a 6-yard score in the third quarter.

West quarterback Marcus Morgan passed for 157 yards, but 103 came on just two plays. The Trojans finished with only five first downs.

Morgan fired a 61-yard scoring pass to a wide open Graham Goering with 2 minutes, 57 seconds remaining in the third quarter but they couldn't mount any sort of threat after that.

Quentin Allison added 109 yards in 16 carries for North Scott, which finished with 234 yards rushing.

Mount Pleasant 42, 3A No. 10 Clear Creek Amana 20

Jack Johnson scored a pair of first-half touchdowns as the Panthers upset the Clippers in Tiffin.

Early in the second half, CCA cut the lead to 14-6 on a 1-yard run by Gage Freeman, but Mount Pleasant scored the next 21 points, including two touchdown runs by Logan Bass.
