Iowa adds 105 new COVID-19 cases

Iowa added 105 new COVID-19 cases for the 24-hour period ending at noon Wednesday, in the final daily report of virus numbers in the state.

The Iowa Department of Public Health is moving to weekly reports as virus cases lessen and the number of Iowans fully vaccinated against COVID-19 increases.

The statewide numbers will be updated every Wednesday. .

The state also will transition COVID-19 reporting to the Iowa Department of Public Health website, decommissioning coronavirus.iowa.gov by late summer.

Data on long-term care facility outbreaks, serology, occupation, underlying health conditions and Test Iowa assessments will no longer be reported on the website.

All of the Test Iowa sites — where Iowans could get free COVID-19 tests during the pandemic — will be closed by July 16. The drive-thru testing site in Linn County closed June 24.

Vaccinations

As of 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, 1,447,839 Iowans are fully vaccinated, according to public health data analyzed by The Gazette.

That’s 54.1 percent of Iowans 12 and older, the minimum age for the vaccine, and 45.89 percent of all Iowans.

In Linn County, 118,093 residents have been fully vaccinated, or 65.45 percent of those are 16 and older.

In Johnson County, 87,325 residents are fully vaccinated, or 70.25 percent of individuals 16 and older.

New cases

The 105 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday bring the total number of confirmed cases in Iowa to 374,358 since March 2020.

The seven-day average for new cases is 76.

Linn County added three new cases, with a 2.21 percent positivity rate and a seven-day average of new cases at four. As of Wednesday, 21.306 cases have been reported in the county since March 2020.

Johnson County reported 12 cases, the most for a single day since May 14, and a 4.08 percent positivity rate. The seven-day average of new cases in the county is three.

Hospitalizations

The number of Iowans hospitalized due to the virus rose from 76 to 85 on Wednesday, the highest number reported since 86 on June 15.

Of those, 25 patients were in intensive care units and 13 patients were on ventilators.

Deaths

The state confirmed one new death in an individual between the ages of 41 to 60 in Scott County. The death occurred in June.

Long-term care

Iowa added one new outbreak of the virus in a long-term care facility, one of two outbreaks in the state.

There are currently 14 individuals associated with a long-term care facility with the virus, up five from Tuesday.

Statewide, 2,373 individuals connected with long-term care facilities have died of the virus. That’s 38.59 percent of the 6,149 COVID-19-related deaths reported in Iowa since March 2020.
