Linn-Mar’s Tatum Depuydt and Cedar Rapids Washington’s Emma Sorg will get to end their senior season the same way they did as a freshmen.
At the state golf tournament.
Depuydt earned Class 4A regional medalist honors at Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville and Sorg grabbed one of the individual berths at Irv Warren Golf Course in Waterloo on Monday. Both advance to the state meet June 1-2 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.
“She’s been the most consistent golfer in and around Eastern Iowa all season,” Linn-Mar Coach Chris James said of the all-Mississippi Valley Conference performer. “Today, was just another example of that.”
Depuydt was 13th in the state as a freshman and will make her third state trip. She fired a 1-under par 70 with four birdies. Depuydt posted her second straight round below par, winning the MVC Mississippi divisional meet last Monday at Airport National.
“Golf is so much about confidence and hers is at an all-time high,” James said. “I couldn’t be happier that, not only she’s going, but she also gets to compete with her teammates.”
Linn-Mar also secured one of the team berths. Abby Hoefle shot 91, Ava Kline came in with 94 and Gabby Mercure added 98 for a runner-up total of 353, placing 18 strokes back of champion Pleasant Valley.
“These girls have put in the time and commitment it takes to improve and be confident to perform at this level,” James said. “We have shot our lowest team score each of the last four meets, setting a new team record for this season each time. As a staff, we knew we could get to this point but it was just a matter of instilling confidence into the girls that they were capable. They wanted to keep our state appearance streak alive and they’ve done that. Now, we’re playing with house money, so to speak.”
The Iowa City Liberty duo of Bella Pettersen and Neely Maurus earned individual state berths. Pettersen, the MVC Mississippi Player of the Year, claimed runner-up medalist honors with 75. Maurus, who carded a tournament-best five birdies, tied for fourth with 77. Maurus was 11th at the 2019 state meet.
Sorg placed 22nd at the 2019 state meet and qualified in 2018. The first-team all-Metro golfer shot 84 to place fourth and advance.
Cedar Falls won the team title with 354, edging runner-up Western Dubuque by two. Both teams will advance to the 4A state meet.
The Bobcats were led by medalist McKenna Stackis, who shot 78. She was the lone golfer to break 80. Teammate Hannah Fangmann was fifth with 84. Ella and Hanna Kluesner shot 95 and 99, respectively, to round out the Bobcats’ score.
