CLASS 1A QUARTERFINALS
No. 3 Alburnett 13, South Winneshiek 4
After giving up four runs in a shaky top of the first, Alburnett scored 13 unanswered to cruise to the semifinals. The Pirates scored two in the first, three in the second, two in the third and -- after a weather delay -- six in the sixth.
Reed Stallman was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Luke Smith was 2-for-4 and drove in two. Hunter Caves scored four runs, hitting 2-for-3 with an RBI from the leadoff spot. Alburnett stole seven bases.
Caden Evans got the win, settling in after the first. He only allowed one hit in the final six innings after giving up three in the first.
No. 10 Remsen St. Mary's 4, No. 2 Martensdale-St. Marys 2
Blaine Harpenau took a no-hitter into the seventh inning to lead the Hawks to a quarterfinal upset. Harpenau allowed just two hits and two earned runs, all in the seventh inning, and struck out six.
St. Mary's did its damage in the top of the fifth, starting with a Jaxon Bunkers double to begin the frame. After Brady Homan singled, two straight hit batters led to the first run. Xavier Gallas followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0 and another run later scored via balk.
After giving up two hits, a walk and a sac fly to begin the seventh, Harpenau gathered himself and got a pop-up and strikeout to end it.
