3A Iowa boys’ state wrestling results: Back from mystery illness, Prairie’s Dylan Munson gets closer to goal

DES MOINES — As Dylan Munson’s temperature went up, he found it hard to keep food down.

The No. 1-seeded 106-pounder from Cedar Rapids Prairie battled a mysterious illness late this season, which made his primary concern maintaining his weight rather than cutting it.

“I was unable to eat,” said Munson, who is healthy now and headed to the Class 3A quarterfinals of the Iowa High School Athletic Association state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena. “I’d throw up every time I ate. I got down to 104 and I finally bounced back from it.

“I just practiced harder and it helped, I guess. It just went away after a while, but honestly, it’s just dependent on how hard you work.”

Munson (38-3) won his only match on Wednesday by injury default and aims to improve on last season’s seventh-place finish at state. And the junior standout’s adopted a methodical approach to ensuring he climbs the medal stand this time around.

“Just win every period and break the guy if you can,” Munson said. “If you can break him early on, break him. If you can settle a match in the first period, settle it. Don’t wait ‘till the third period.”

Linn-Mar’s Grant Kress remains unbeaten against Iowa foes

Linn-Mar’s top-seeded 157-pounder Grant Kress settled his first match with a pin in the second period. The senior remained unbeaten this season against competitors from the state of Iowa and seeks to improve on last season’s runner-up finish at 152.

“I’ve always believed in myself,” Kress said. “Every single year since freshman year, (I’ve believed) I’m the best in the state. I don’t really care what other people think. But, yeah, just coming out and dominating, doing what I do best. It’s always been my goal.”

Kress saw three Lions teammates also pin their way to the quarterfinals. Sixth-seeded 126-pounder Nate Fish won his second-round match by fall, as did top-seeded 144-pounder Kane Naaktgeboren and fifth-seeded 215-pound Grant Schultz.

“Man, it’s just fun being on this team,” Kress said. “Everyone has the same energy. We just keep the ball rolling, getting better and better as we go.”

Top Iowa City wrestlers advance

That’s what top-seeded 113-pounder Alexander Pierce of Iowa City West did Wednesday, notching a win by fall in 41 seconds. Teammate Justin Avila — the third-seeded 150-pounder — also pinned his opponent.

No. 2-seeded 132-pounder Cale Seaton of Iowa City High won by technical fall to advance to the quarterfinals and the Little Hawks’ No. 3 seed at 138, Kael Kurtz, won by decision, 5-2.

Kurtz seeks to become a four-time medalist and he’ll need to notch a repeat win over a recent foe in the quarterfinals to cement that achievement. Kurtz will face Wil Oberbroeckling of Southeast Polk, whom he beat 5-2 two weeks ago in the regional duals.

“So (I’m) using that match and building off of it and just focusing on one match at a time here,” said Kurtz, who placed fourth at 132 at state last season. “If you keep winning, it’s only gonna be one a day, so one day, wake up, wrestle a match, and then I’ll get ready for the next day.”

Southeast Polk led the 3A team standings after day one with 58 points. Linn-Mar stood eighth with 32 points.
