Here are some of the Gazette area individuals and teams to watch during the 2022 Iowa high school girls’ golf season.
North Linn’s Austin Hilmer and his father and head coach, Mike, helped the Lynx to a state championship. Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Kenzie Reed led his team to the Class 4A semifinals. They headline the 2021-22 Gazette all-area boys’ basketball team.
Girls’ track & field 2022: Top area teams and individuals
The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association has announced its 2022 all-state boys’ basketball teams, with North Linn’s Austin Hilmer joining Monticello’s Tate Petersen, Springville’s Rhenden Wagaman, English Valleys’ Kaden Hall, Marion’s Brayson Laube and Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Kenzie Hall on first teams.
Dyersville Beckman’s Padraig Gallagher and Williamsburg’s Derek Weisskopf have been named players of the year in boys’ basketball in their respective divisions of the Wamac Conference.
Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis started five games as a red-shirt freshman for the University of Minnesota in 2022 and then the entire 2023 season. But the Gophers brought in a touted quarterback from the transfer portal that offseason, and Kaliakmanis ended up moving on to Rutgers, where he has become one of the best QBs in the Big Ten Conference.
