Sure, the Cedar Rapids Xavier boys’ shuttle hurdle relay team would have preferred a different path to victory. But, as Grayson Hartman said, “That’s the way track goes.”

Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Mehar and Meera Julka finished first and second, respectively, and the Saints march on to state golf for the first time since 2019. Mehar fired a 71 for medalist honors. Meera was runner-up with 76 Wednesday at Twin Pines.

Western Dubuque’s baseball team won the Class 3A state championship last year, culminating a seven-game win streak at the end of the season. Their coach Casey Bryant decided he wasn’t going to shave until his Bobcats lost again. They won their season-opening double-header Monday night.

The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released its preseason rankings. Monday marks the first day of official competition. West Des Moines Dowling (4A), Western Dubuque (3A), Van Meter (2A) and Remsen St. Mary’s (1A) open the season top-ranked.

The 2023 Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ track and field indoor meet was Friday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

It sure wasn’t easy, but Cedar Rapids Xavier sprung itself free in the final two minutes and topped Western Dubuque in a Class 4A girls’ basketball regional final. The Saints’ bid for a title repeat lives on.
