State track and field, Class 3A boys: Quentin Nauman is only a sophomore, but won four titles and, as it turned out, Western Dubuque needed every bit of his heroics to claim the team championship.

State track and field, Class 3A girls: Aly Stahle chilled out in a Drake Stadium restroom, then made the way back outside, laced up her spikes and won the 100-meter hurdles Saturday afternoon.

State track and field, Class 3A boys: Quentin Nauman continued a scintillating state meet Friday morning at Drake Stadium; his 1:51.5 anchor brought Western Dubuque from behind in the distance medley relay.

State track and field, Class 3A girls: Third-place finishes by Eastin Whisner (400 hurdles) and Libby Dix (shot put) have Mount Vernon on top heading to the final day.

Solon junior Ben Kampman was part of an area boys’ championship bonanza Thursday at the state track and field meet, winning the 3A boys’ discus title with an effort of 186 feet, 3 inches.

The state golf tournaments for all four classes will be held May 23-24. Cedar Rapids Washington and Linn-Mar advance to the Class 4A state meet at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. Cedar Rapids Xavier qualified for the 3A championships at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

Cedar Rapids Washington was the Class 4A state runner-up a year ago. The Warriors earned a chance to improve that finish, winning the regional team title Wednesday at Gardner Golf Course.

The Iowa high school state track and field meet begins at 9 a.m. Thursday. Here are the top individuals and teams in the boys’ field, along with The Gazette’s championship picks.

Western Dubuque has won the last two Class 3A state titles. The Bobcats start the 2024 season atop the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association preseason rankings.

Monday was the first day of competition. The opening week includes a top-10 Class 4A meeting, a battle between defending state champion neighbors and a 3A Metro showdown.
