Holden Arnaman scored 27 points, and Reese Trepanier hit a huge go-ahead 3-pointer in the final two minutes as West Branch knocked off Class 2A No. 10 Iowa City Regina, 55-49, Friday night at Regina. The win tied the teams atop the River Valley Conference South Division and ended Regina’s 13-game win streak.

Cascade’s Jackson Lieurance scored 47 points in a game last week, breaking a school record set by Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. He also set the school record for 3-pointers in a game. A few days later, West Branch’s Holden Arnaman scored a school-record 48 points.

Alburnett has climbed to the top of the Class 1A boys’ wrestling dual rankings. The Pirates were fourth at the 2023 state duals and will host regional duals again this season. The Wamac Conference has seven teams in the field with No. 2 Mount Vernon, West Delaware and Indpendence hosting 2A regional duals. Linn-Mar is the lone Gazette-area host in 3A.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the first installment of its dual rankings for all classes. The poll is used to determined regional dual qualifiers and are considered in pairings. Eight regional dual champions advance to the State Duals tournament Feb. 3 at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Derek Weisskopf of Class 3A state champion Williamsburg and Preston Ries of 2A semifinalist Monticello have been named class captains by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association. The honors were in conjunction with the IPSWA all-state teams, which were voted upon Sunday and released Tuesday.
