Iowa high school volleyball regional finals: Monday's 3A, 4A, 5A scores and coverage

The first 24 tickets to the 2019 Iowa high school state volleyball tournament were punched Monday night at regional finals in classes 5A, 4A and 3A.

Rylee Fay helped direct Liberty's remarkable growth this fall, and she was in the thick of it all Monday, when the second-ranked Lightning swept No. 11 Hempstead.

In just its third year of existence, Liberty (34-2) will make its state-tournament debut next Tuesday.

'Considering where we were two years ago, who woulda thunk?' said Lightning Coach Randy Dolson, who will be taking his third different team to state. 'This is a great group of kids, and they show so much resilience.'

Liberty served 12 aces, eight in the second set.

Getting to the state volleyball tournament has become an expectation for Cedar Rapids Xavier.

With tall, powerful hitters like this, it is easy to see why the Saints will be one of the favorites to win the thing.

'I think we are ready,' Xavier Coach Austin Filer said. 'I am fortunate that we have gotten us to a spot where that is just the expectation."

You don't just assume you're qualifying for the state tournament every year. At least you shouldn't.

Delaney Rice and Kayba Laube didn't get there the previous two years, which makes going back this year all the better.

'We knew it wasn't a given every year,' Rice said, after her Marion volleyball team swept past Carlisle in a Class 4A regional final Monday night. 'We had to work for it.'
