I’ve covered lots of beats over my decades as a reporter, and one reason I really enjoy higher education is because it touches on them all. One day I’m writing about science and interviewing University of Iowa NASA researchers, the next I’m writing about health care, or agriculture, or a new Iowa State-supported business, or athletic budgets, or criminal justice, or the Legislature and potential bills affecting Iowa’s university and college campuses. I also love that I get to investigate and dig deep on some stories, report hard news, and then also share incredible and sometimes harrowing tales of survival or discovery. “I can still remember we talked about it a lot,” Jerre Stead, 80, told a crowd of hundreds Thursday on the University of Iowa campus, where in earned his bachelor’s degree in 1965. “Mary Joy said, ‘Someday, if we ever are fortunate enough, having had multiple children born here, we want to give something back for that. In late May, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed new legislation into law requiring Iowa’s Board of Regents to report specific financial-success metrics of its public university graduates – including their median annual income one, five, and 10 years post-graduation; median debt of those who took out student loans; and the percent of a graduate’s income spent paying off student-loan debt.
