Emails obtained by The Gazette indicate the enrollment process this summer has been more challenging than others — and potentially more problematic for students aiming to complete degree requirements and graduate in four years.

Due to a larger-than-expected freshmen class headed to the University of Iowa next month – meaning strong demand for on-campus housing for the fall semester – UI has announced several measures aimed at mitigating crowding in its residence halls.

The day the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade – upending nearly 50 years of precedent by finding no constitutional right to an abortion exists – University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson emailed the UI community asking that the campus remains “a place for open and respectful discussion of differences.”

Bolstered by tens of millions in federal stimulus and COVID aid, both of Iowa’s public research universities busted external funding records in fiscal 2022 – by $49 million at the University of Iowa and $42.6 million at Iowa State University.

“It revealed just innumerable galaxies in this one deep image, staring back to almost the dawn of the universe,” she said. “It’s seeing galaxies that were just forming. I was at a loss for words. I was just absolutely stunned.”

The study published June 29 in Science Translational Medicine found, for example, that by infusing carbon monoxide into consumable foams — like those chefs use on cooking shows to add flavor and sophisticate their plates — doctors could have a safe way to get a therapeutic form of the feared gas into a patients’ gastrointestinal tract.
