More than a year after the University of Iowa sued a pair of contractors it said was responsible for installing defective and “potentially life-safety threatening” windows on at least nine floors of its 14-story Stead Family Children’s Hospital, UI attorneys report an arbitration hearing is set for May 6-24, 2024.

Compounding escalating costs associated with the University of Iowa’s construction of its 14-story Stead Family Children’s Hospital, campus officials are asking permission to spend $45 million replacing damaged windows on nine floors – tripling the $15 million they originally planned to spend replacing cracked or delaminated windows on two floors.

University of Iowa Health Care’s websites were back up and running Wednesday morning after an outage Tuesday knocked them down for hours. UIHC officials haven’t answered questions about when the outage started and how long the sites were down. They also haven’t answered questions about what caused the outage and whether it was the result of a cyberattack.

University of Iowa Health Care officials confirmed Tuesday afternoon their public websites are down – including those for the UI Hospitals & Clinics, UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, and UI Carver College of Medicine.

Once again, the University of Iowa has lost a legal battle with a contractor that worked on its six-year-old Stead Family Children’s Hospital – adding millions to UI’s swelling legal tab and further ballooning its total project cost to more than $420 million.

The UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital is considering installing a NICU camera system allowing families of intensive care infants to do watch livestreams of their babies stretching and arching and blinking or just sleeping.

Spelling out its contention with a $12.8 million jury verdict awarded to a contractor on its Stead Family Children’s Hospital, the state – on behalf of the University of Iowa and Board of Regents – is accusing jurors of leveling “excessive” damages and of being “influenced by passion or prejudice.”

Meanwhile, contractor Modern Piping the day after its favorable verdict Oct. 27 asked the court to require the state, UI and regents to pay an additional $16 million related to bond issues and questions that arose at the start of the disagreement in April 2016.

More than seven years after a Cedar Rapids contractor first sued the University of Iowa over payment for work on a pair of high-profile projects – its new Hancher Auditorium and children’s hospital – a jury has delivered another blow to UI, ordering it pay $12.8 million more.
