Seven years after a Cedar Rapids-based contractor first started feuding with the University of Iowa over its work on the towering Stead Family Children’s Hospital, Iowa’s high court has weighed in and sided with the university on part of its appeal — reversing an order to pay Modern Piping another $12.8 million.
Mason – who his parents described as smart beyond his years, with a dry sense of humor – was just spreading his teenage wings, gaining more independence, and looking forward to his first high school season of soccer, a sport he’s played most of his life – since age 4.
“I can still remember we talked about it a lot,” Jerre Stead, 80, told a crowd of hundreds Thursday on the University of Iowa campus, where in earned his bachelor’s degree in 1965. “Mary Joy said, ‘Someday, if we ever are fortunate enough, having had multiple children born here, we want to give something back for that. We want to make a difference at the university’.”
