Iowa Republican U.S. Reps. Ashley Hinson and Mariannette Miller-Meeks said the legislation went too far. The pair instead sponsored a bill that would allow people over age 18 to access FDA-approved birth control pills over-the-counter.
New legal standards for potential abortion restrictions in Iowa must be argued first in front of a lower court judge, the Iowa Supreme Court has ruled.
Iowa’s nine coal-fired power plants produced about 24 percent of the energy in the state in 2020.
The governor also is requesting the courts rehear a recent case on abortion regulations in order to set standards for future restrictions.
Overturning Roe v. Wade was celebrated as a victory for abortion opponents, but it’s not their path to ending the procedure in Iowa. Moving forward, activists say they plan to continue to push for a proposed amendment to the Iowa Constitution.
Several states immediately enacted bans on abortion following the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. In anticipation of more out-of-state patients, abortion providers in the Midwest say they are working to allocate more resources to Iowa and other states where the procedure is still legal.
